The ostrich is the largest living bird and is commonly found on the land of
Africa. This bird is native to the dry savannas of Africa and is well adapted
to desert life. Ostriches get water from the plants they eat. Unlike most other
birds, the ostrich is unable to fly but is the fastest running bird. When an
ostrich does not want to be seen, it lies down on the ground.
The ostrich is a tall bird. The adult male may reach a height of 8 feet (2.4
meters). The neck accounts for almost half of its height. The male weighs about
345 pounds (156 kilograms). Ostriches eat plants, nuts and small animals like
lizards and insects, and they can go without water for long periods of time.
Ostriches stay in a flock of 5 to 50 birds. An ostrich egg is the largest
egg in the world. Their eggs are 4.5 x 7 inches (11 x 18 cm) across and weigh
3 pounds (1400 g). They are capable of running at 60 mph (70 kmp).
It can outrun most predators, but can also kick to protect itself. Ostriches
cannot fly. They have a life span of up to 40 years in captivity. Ostrich races
in the United States have been criticized by animal rights organizations.
