Lions are the brilliant animals and are believed as a symbol of strength, courage
and nobility. Lions at one time were found in regions from Greece through Middle
East to northern India, but now the status of lions is entirely different. Now
lions can be often been seen in open woodlands and thick bush, scrub, and tall
grassy areas of most part of Africa and a few population are also living in
India.
Lions are the second largest cat among the four big cats i.e. tiger, lion,
jaguars and leopard with extreme powerful legs, strong jaws and sharp teeth
that can bring down and kill a large prey. The weight of lion ranges between
150-225 kg for males and 260-330 for females. The lions are also the laziest
among the big wild cats. Lions generally spend 16 to 20 hours a day resting
and sleeping and what ever time is left they utilizes it for hunting and also
protecting their area or territory. The also keep in contact with other lions
by roaring to each other.
Lions roar loud enough that can be heard till couple of miles. Lions are purely
carnivorous and their diet includes wild beast, zebras, buffaloes, young elephants,
rhinos, hippos and giraffes sometimes they do have mice, lizards, tortoises,
warthogs, antelopes and even crocodiles. In older days, lions have been killed
to express bravery but in todays time lions are killed for their skin which
is very expensive. Lions are protected in some parts of Africa and also remaining
portions of the world.
