A Kangaroo is a marsupial means that they have
pouches on the front of their abdomen wherein they keep and carry their
newborns or "joeys" in through out their infancy also an Australian
icon and can generally be found in Australia and Tasmania, as well as on
surrounding islands. Kangaroos have very powerful forelimbs and legs by
the means of which they can hop. Kangaroos are only the mammals that can
hop. They can travel at greater speeds till 30-35 miles per hour and at
the same time can leap some 30 feet. They can balance themselves very efficiently
by means of their long tail. Their body is made up of thick course and wool
hair of shades in gray, brown or red. Kangaroos may differ in weight and
size depending upon the breed. Some kangaroos stand 5-6 feet tall and weigh
between 50-120 pounds and may reach at a maximum of 200 pounds. Kangaroos
live in a group names "Mobs". The male kangaroo are called as
"Bucks", female kangaroos are called as "Does" and babies
are called as "Joeys". Female kangaroos are generally smaller
than males of the same species. After when the babies are of one year old
they do not require mothers feed anymore but to learn everything from mother
they still stay in pouch. On average, kangaroos live in the wild for six
to eight years. Kangaroo are herbivores i.e. they only eat plants, small
trees and grasses. They can survive long periods without water. To keep
themselves cool they rest under the sunlight or they dig shallow holes under
the trees and sit on the cool sand and lick their own arm. Kangaroos live
and travel in organized groups or "mobs," dominated by the largest
male. Kangaroos have an excellent sense of eyesight, hearing, smelling and
swimming but they will attain the way towards when they are chased and there
is no other way to go. Humans have been hunting kangaroos for their meat
and hides. |
