Grasshoppers are plants eating animal and are adapted to specialized habitats
however, in comparison to many other insects, grasshoppers are generally large.
They can generally be seen in the spring and summer but mostly seen in autumn
season where the place is full of grasses.
Some are more than 4 inches long. They vary in color from green to olive or
brown and may be light yellow or red markings or Brown, with some darker markings.
They have also got big hind legs which help them to jump. The grasshopper has
conspicuous eyes and also has antennae or sensors, on its head by which they
can sense anything however; their antennas are 20 - 24 segments long.
Male grasshoppers and female grasshoppers can easily be differentiated. Male
grasshopper has a single unpaired plate at the end of abdomen and female grasshopper
has 2 pairs of valves at the end of their abdomen. Grasshoppers are generally
herbivores on various plants but some species of grasshoppers like to feed on
grasses. Grasshoppers crawl in their natural habitat, but most kinds can fly.
Most grasshoppers eat only plant food. Male Grasshoppers usually chirp or
sing. Grasshopper populations are generally controlled in nature by predators
such as birds, lizards, frogs, and snakes.
